Faculty teaching and learning reading groups focus on student-faculty partnerships

The Teaching Academy and the Center for Instructional Excellence invite Purdue West Lafayette instructors to join Purdue’s faculty teaching and learning reading group in the Spring 2023 semester. The reading group brings together instructors from around the campus in small groups to discuss how recent books about the classroom and teaching and learning may inform what they do.

For the spring semester, participants will read Alise de Bie, Elizabeth Marquis, Alison Cook-Sather and Leslie Patricia Luqueño’s “Promoting Equity and Justice Through Pedagogical Partnership.” The book, written through an international collaboration bringing together the perspectives of faculty and students, shares a framework, stories and specific strategies for enhancing teaching through collaboration between students and faculty and specific tips and strategies for creating classroom environments that enhance students’ feelings of inclusion, toward the aim of creating more equitable learning outcomes.

Those interested in learning more about the book can view a presentation by Alison Cook-Sather delivered in Spring 2022 at Purdue.

Participants will read the book over three meetings throughout the spring semester to discuss the ideas, theories and application for this semester and in the future. Copies of the book will be provided to participants, or online access is available through Purdue Libraries.

Participants can choose to meet in person on Thursdays from 1:30-3 p.m. or virtually on Fridays from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on the following dates:

Thursdays: Feb. 16, March 30 and April 20
Fridays: Feb. 17, March 31 and April 21

Instructors who would like to participate during Spring 2023 should fill out an online questionnaire by Jan. 27 providing information about themselves and their availability.

Those who cannot make it this semester but are interested in faculty reading and learning communities, or who have suggestions for future books/topics, may contact Dan Guberman at dguberma@purdue.edu

The faculty teaching and learning reading groups are part of Innovative Learning, Purdue West Lafayette’s hub approach to connect instructors to the resources they need to engage students, develop courses in any instructional modality, and enhance learning across the university. Members include the Center for Instructional Excellence, Libraries and the School of Information Studies, Purdue Online, Envision Center, and Teaching and Learning Technologies.
